What is Character Counter?

A character counter is a tool that tells you exactly how many characters your text contains, both including and excluding spaces. This is critical when writing for platforms with strict character limits like Twitter (280 characters), Instagram bios (150 characters), SMS messages (160 characters), and LinkedIn headlines (120 characters). Our character counter runs entirely in your browser, processes text in real-time as you type, and shows visual progress bars so you can see at a glance how close you are to each platform's limit. No signup required, no data stored, no rate limits.

How to Use Character Counter

Type or paste your content into the text area. Counts update instantly as you type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?+
Characters counts every single character including spaces, tabs, and newlines. Characters without spaces excludes all whitespace, giving you the count of actual content characters.
Does the tool count emojis correctly?+
Yes, JavaScript counts emojis as they appear in the string. Note that some complex emojis (like family emojis or flag sequences) may count as multiple characters since they consist of multiple Unicode code points joined together.
Is there a maximum text length?+
No hard limit. The tool runs in your browser so it handles texts of any practical length. Performance depends on your device but is fast for texts up to hundreds of thousands of characters.
Why does Twitter show 280 characters but my tweet was rejected?+
Twitter counts certain elements differently. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of actual length, and some Unicode characters count as two. Our tool counts raw characters which may differ slightly from Twitter platform counting.
Can I use this for languages other than English?+
Absolutely. The counter works with any language or script since it counts raw characters. This includes Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, and all other Unicode text.
