Cloaking

Cloaking is a highly deceptive black-hat SEO technique where the content presented to the search engine crawler is significantly different from the content shown to the end-user's browser. The intent behind cloaking is typically to manipulate search engine rankings by showing crawlers keyword-rich or optimized content, while users see a different, often less relevant or spammy, page.

For instance, a website might display a page full of text and keywords to Googlebot, hoping to rank highly for those terms. However, when a human user visits the same URL, they might see a page with sparse content, an image, or even a redirect to an unrelated site. This practice violates Google's Webmaster Guidelines because it provides a misleading experience to users and attempts to deceive search engines about the true nature of a page. Techniques used for cloaking can involve detecting the user-agent (e.g., Googlebot vs. Chrome browser) or IP address to serve different content. Due to its deceptive nature, cloaking is considered a severe offense and invariably leads to manual penalties, de-indexing, and a complete loss of organic visibility.
