Keyword Cannibalization

When multiple pages on your site compete for the same keyword, weakening all of them.

Keyword cannibalisation is two or more of your own pages competing for the same search intent. Search engines pick one and the others' links and relevance are wasted — often the shallower page wins. The fix is consolidation: merge the pages, keep the stronger URL, and redirect the rest.

Definition

Keyword cannibalization occurs when multiple pages on your site target the same keyword, causing them to compete against each other in search results. Instead of one strong page ranking well, you end up with multiple weaker pages that dilute each other's ranking signals.

Why It Matters

Cannibalization is a silent ranking killer. You might have 5 blog posts all targeting "SEO tips" — Google does not know which one to rank, so it rotates between them, never giving any one page enough authority to rank well.

Example

Fix: identify cannibalizing pages using GSC (look for multiple URLs ranking for the same query), then consolidate — merge the content into one authoritative page and 301 redirect the others.
