Category Page SEO
Making listing pages rank, since they target broader commercial terms than product pages.
Category page SEO is optimising listing pages — the page for "running shoes" rather than one shoe. They target broader, higher-volume commercial terms than product pages and usually convert better than a blog post for the same query. The recurring problems are thin content above the products, and faceted filters generating unlimited crawlable URLs.
Definition
A category page's ranking difficulty is that it is mostly a grid of links. It needs enough of its own content to be about something — an introduction that answers what the category covers and how to choose within it — without pushing the products below the fold.
The second issue is faceting. Filters for size, colour and price multiply into thousands of near-identical URLs. The standard handling is to allow indexing of a small number of genuinely valuable combinations and noindex the rest.
Why It Matters
Category terms carry both the volume and the commercial intent. A site whose products rank but whose categories do not is competing only for the narrowest queries.
Example
"Running shoes" is a category query; "Nike Pegasus 41 size 10" is a product one. The first is worth far more and needs a page built to answer it.
