Community Management

Running the space where your users talk to each other and to you.

Community management is running the space where your users talk to each other and to you — a forum, Discord, subreddit or comment section. For search it produces user-generated content in the audience's own words, but only if the community is real. An empty forum, or one filled with simulated discussion, is worse than none.

Definition

The work is seeding early discussion, answering quickly enough that asking feels worthwhile, moderating, and surfacing what gets asked repeatedly into documentation.

The SEO value is genuine — long-tail questions phrased as people actually phrase them — but it is a by-product. Communities generated to produce indexable pages are scaled content abuse, and they are recognisable because nobody is actually talking.

Why It Matters

A real community is a durable moat and the best source of the questions your documentation is missing. A fake one is a liability that Google's policies name directly.

Example

A support forum where the same question appears twenty times is telling you exactly which page to write. That signal only exists if the people are real.
