What is PDF Header & Footer?

PDF Header & Footer is a free online tool that adds custom text to the top and bottom of every page in your PDF. Use template variables like {page}, {pages}, {date}, and {time} to insert dynamic content. Choose left, center, or right alignment for each section, set the font size, and optionally skip the first page (for title pages). Perfect for adding page numbers, dates, company names, or confidentiality notices. Runs entirely in your browser.

How to Use PDF Header & Footer

    Upload your PDF

    Click the upload area or drag and drop a PDF file. The total page count is shown.

    Configure header

    Enter header text. Use {page}, {pages}, {date}, {time} for dynamic content. Choose alignment and font size.

    Configure footer

    Enter footer text (defaults to "Page {page} of {pages}"). Choose alignment and font size.

    Check "Skip first page" to exclude the title/cover page from headers and footers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What template variables can I use?+
{page} inserts the current page number, {pages} inserts the total page count, {date} inserts today's date, and {time} inserts the current time. Variables are case-insensitive.
Can I have both a header and footer?+
Yes. Configure both sections independently — each can have its own text, alignment, and font size. Leave either blank to skip it.
Are my files safe?+
Yes. Everything processes in your browser. No files are uploaded to any server.
Will headers/footers overlap existing content?+
Headers and footers are placed in the 0.5-inch margin area. If your document has narrow margins, text may overlap. Adjust font size if needed.
Can I use different text on different pages?+
Not directly, but template variables make each page unique. For example, "Page {page} of {pages}" produces "Page 1 of 10", "Page 2 of 10", etc.
What font is used?+
Helvetica (a standard PDF base font). It renders consistently across all PDF viewers without embedding additional font files.
Can I add headers to a specific page range?+
Not directly. Use our PDF Splitter to extract the pages you want, add headers, then merge them back with the original using our PDF Merger.
Can I remove headers/footers added by this tool?+
Headers and footers are drawn directly on the page content. They cannot be selectively removed after saving. Keep the original file as a backup.
