Why is "click here" bad?

Because it describes nothing. A screen reader user listing the links on a page hears "click here" with no context, and a crawler gets no signal about the destination. Both problems are solved by naming the destination.

Does anchor text affect rankings?

For internal links, it is one of the clearest ways to tell Google what a page is about. For external links pointing at you it matters a great deal, though you control that far less. Either way, write it for the reader first — over-optimised exact-match anchors on every internal link look manipulative.

What about an icon-only link?

It needs an accessible name: alt text on the image, or aria-label on the link. Visually it stays an icon; to a screen reader it becomes a described link instead of "link".

Is it a problem to use the same anchor text for different pages?

It is confusing rather than penalised. Two links called "Learn more" going to different pages give a reader no way to tell them apart in a link list.

Should I worry about the number of links on a page?

Not much. The old 100-link guideline was withdrawn long ago. Relevance and clarity matter more than count.
